Benchmark 1X to 16X PCI-E PCI E Express Extender – 193

October 11, 2019

Hi, welcome to my playhouse and today am still
playing around with graphics cartoon computers
and I was talking about this dude in another
video that I just got from China and it’s
PCI-E X1 or maybe it’s X60, anyway your able
to put your graphics card in this slot and
your able to put this thing in your computer
it would run the graphics card through a USB
cable, so I want to show that to you so I
prepared that on the table with the computer.
Here on the table I have a mother board processor
RAM and a big graphics card. I have installed
the graphics card in the computer and I am
just gonna run a test, this is PC Mac performance
test and the 2D graphics got a 675 and 2D
graphics got a 2113, that’s the bottom there
and that’s the 2D graphics and what I really
wanna know is if I move the 2D graphics to
this guy, will the performance be similar?,
or how would that look, why do I want that
because I wanna put the graphics card in a
server like over here, this is an IBM 3650
model 2, I don’t think it can take a graphics
card this big. This graphics card will even
though this computer crop or server will t
able to handle that amount of power, there
is only this little plug down here for delivering
that amount of power, and that’s a lot of
amps, like 12volts and 450 amps, at least
40 amps. It would be possible to have a graphics
card like this on a server but externally
plugging in the graphics card in this slot
and powering it from an external plot of grapg,
look at this, it’s a blue one. I just found
this button yesterday, I have had this power
supply for 4 years maybe, I just the blue
light dial button yesterday, this is kind
of amazing. So what am gonna do now, am gonna
power down the system and move the graphics
card over in this setup, my little test setup
computer as shut down so amt just gonna turn
off the power. The power for the things are
just gonna be the same but this little thing
needs power too, it needs power input there
and of course the USB connection. I just have
the graphics card sitting over there, as far
as it can reach and then we will plug this
into one of this small ones, and the system
is now been powered on by short shutting in,I
have to turn on the mouse, actually wanna
cut it off here. You know what, oh! just plug
it into the cable too and then we have a picture,
so that part ay least it’s still working,
am really fascinated about that, that the
graphics card is working through a USB tree
cable. The network cable is in the way, climb
over that. The resolution as gone down, am
just gonna try to get that out of it and oh!
stolen device driver software and add to my
South card ,it as nothing to do with. Okay
it’s complaining about the ATI graphics, servers,
oh! it’s not installed, maybe something is
wrong with it, that’s right to stop the video,
the catalyst control center and it’s complaining
about it’s not able to see that it as a ITA
graphics card and storage. Am gonna try and
reboot the server once more, it looks like
it did try to install an update or something
like that, shutting it down and try again.
This might be better after another reboot,
it seem like the screen resolution went up,
so am complaining about the server, I really
should have picked something faster than this,
I just picked it because it already had windows
7 on it and now am paying the price, this
thing is really really very slow. Okay after
another reboot, you definately can now see
the ATI ready on HD 5900 series and that’s
because it’s also sitting right there. So
now all I wanna do is I will try and run the
test again, and for those of you whot don’t
know the test, I just show you what’s good
it. If you write CPU and you get the CPU pinch
mark, there is PC MAC software and right over
here, there is a place where you can download
the software and this one back there, you
can download it by pressing 104 windows 7
or Windows 8 or whatever. I did that, i installed
it and it’s down here and it’s free to try
in 30days and it’s still on day 1 and it will
do some thinking and check out what things
are on your system and then you can run the
benchmark, am gonna run that and am gonna
be very silent and look at this and fast forward.
Okay completed, let’s see the numbers how
they look, this looks similar to what I got
the last time so am not gonna upload this,
okay there is some difference here, we have
got 671 with 2D graphics, that was 675, so
that’s flawless, that’s nothing absolutely
nothing, but down here we have got 456 and
with the graphics card sitting in the right
slot, we have got 2113, so this is considerable
less. So this does works with the graphics
card sitting on the side, now am gonna turn
it off and am gonna try and move this little
slot, the PCI-E slot, over in one of them,
the longer slots to see if it does any difference
at all . Okay I moved it from this slot and
up to this slot and this is a PCI-X1 slot
and this is a X16 slot and still only using
an X, the thing that follows and that’s only
an X1. So we are gonna start the test again
up here, it’s still in that slot, and the
result is just in and it hasn’t moved any,
apparently it does cost on the account of
speed. So just to gain an idea on how this
works, with an external power supply this
server will now be a quick bigger, rather
large and powerful graphics card. I cannot
find them on the internet, that’s in 2009,
this graphics card was the fastest on the
market, that’s the way that this could work,
not sure if, it seems like am only getting
half of the effect out of the graphics card
in this one. Another option else will be to
alter the cord in here, put the graphics card
in and just bring in the cables from an external
power supply. Well so this works as well,
it’s done, funny to put a very big graphics
card into a machine and just run it with a
tiny little cable like this, it feels wrong
but as we can see the performance of the graphics
card is exactly 100%. I don’t know how this
would work in a mutual environment if the
mutualt machine would see the graphics card
in a different way, am gonna t testing that
on the way. Yeah thank you for watching do
subscribe to my channel if you wanna see again
and you can catch over on Google plus and
have a really nice day bye bye.

This is actually not meanth for people who want to do something like this… it’s for miners because mining doest need such high transfer rate from pci slot so it doesnt impact performance in that usecase…

Question, using that extender it's possible to connect a standard PCI device on that extender and be detected on the OS ? Regards and thanks. 🙂

Interesting experiment you made. Getting a graphics card to fit and actually work in a 1U or 2U server can be a pain in the ass. Still use an old HP Proliant DL380 G4 as a Windows 7 x64 client for a special monitoring application. With only PCI-X slots i tried a bunch of PCI graphics cards that could work and would be better than the abysmal onboard ATI Rage XL. Suprisingly one of the last PCI cards made, the Geforce GT610, was compatible. Tried it in a DL380 G3 also just for fun and no problems.

Did it work with your server by using an external PSU though ? Did you have to short our external PSU to make the whole thing works ?
Is it mandatory to plug the SATA power into the adapter ?

When you said you had the power supply for 4 years, and you just now found out there is a switch to turn on blue LEDs.. The excitement in your voice made me geniunly feel happy for you. Im glad you found that little button that turns on LEDs.

Wouldn't be better to use this PCI x1 Extensor? https://www.amazon.com.mx/Express-Adapter-Extender-Cable-cable/dp/B01B4BH5DS (I mean… this extension doesn't need electrical power)

Can I use the pcie x1 slot adapter like USB 3.0? it works like a usb 3.0 normal port? or it just works with the pcie x16 adapter for a graphics card? thak you 🙂

    Very nice benchmark!
But i have a question, how? I mean technically, why the bandwidth of 1x it's too similar to the 16x? And in games the same thing happens.
Looks like the total bandwidth of the GPU is less than the bandwidth that the PCI-E 16x can support.
In other tests (in games for example), the difference was only 25%, and it's not linear, the logical reasoning (if it's linear) is to lose close to 93% of the GPU performance when there are 15 lines PCI-E less.
Hope that you can resolve my doubt x)

Could.a SLI be done with this?

  • Reply Chris Balfour April 1, 2018 at 3:16 pm

There's an easy, free way to do this. Any length card can work in 1X,2X,4X,8X. The link is a video from Linus Tech Tips modifying 1X slots to work with any length card. I've used a pair of flush cutters to snip out the back of PCI-E connectors, which is probably the easiest way to do it.

Will it work if i put my wifi card in my pcie x16 and i put my gpu in the extender (cuz the gpu is too big it covers the pcie x1 and i need to put my wifi card)

  • Reply Mamdouh Tawadros November 17, 2018 at 11:54 am

Thank you for this experiment. Naturally it takes a server specialist to think of that. Now I have a question: you connect the PCI 1X to the graphic card, have you tried to connect the graphic card directly to usb3, and see how the degradation will be? This will provide a way for connecting a completely closed server to an external gpu unit.
